By Sorana Necula, Colegiul National George Coșbuc, Cluj-Napoca, Romania
Setting the Stage
As part of the launch of the international eTwinning project High Schoolers Talk I, a pre-survey was conducted among 21 participating students. The findings highlight what motivates them, the themes they care about, and the challenges they anticipate. These insights will guide the project’s activities and ensure they align with student needs.
Motivation: Dialogue Across Borders
The survey revealed that students are most excited about connecting with peers from other countries. Over half (57.1%) said their biggest motivation is live discussions with international students. This shows that the project is valued not just as a public speaking exercise, but as a chance for genuine intercultural exchange.
Thematic Interests: Creativity and Social Awareness
Students expressed strong interest in cultural and creative topics:
Art, Music & Creativity: 85.7%
Culture & Traditions: 57.1%
Education & The Future: 47.6%
Beyond these, students suggested socially conscious themes such as the impact of AI on the economy, mental health awareness, and the role of art in shaping perception.
Language Goals: Building Confidence
While most students feel fairly confident in English, many highlighted specific challenges:
Lexical retrieval (finding the right words): 52.4%
Pronunciation: 33.3%
This points to the need for vocabulary-building and fluency-focused activities to help students feel more secure when speaking.
Digital Readiness: Tools for Success
The cohort is digitally prepared, with more than half reporting easy access to microphones and cameras. Canva emerged as the preferred tool for creating visual aids, showing that students are ready to integrate design and technology into their presentations.
Conclusion
The survey paints a picture of a motivated, creative, and socially aware group of students. They are eager to engage in intercultural dialogue, explore artistic and cultural themes, and strengthen their English skills. With their readiness and enthusiasm, High Schoolers Talk I is set to foster both linguistic growth and intercultural competence.
